Tropical Cyclone Weekly Summary #12 (October 20 - 27, 1991) This report is compiled from warnings issued by: National Hurricane Center Central Pacific Hurricane Center Joint Typhoon Warning Center Japanese Meteorological Agency Royal Observatory of Hong Kong Indian Meteorological Service Reunion Meteorological Service Mauritius Meteorological Service (others may be added as they become available) WEEKLY TROPICAL CYCLONE SUMMARY #12: OCTOBER 20 - 27, 1991 North Atlantic Basin: Tropical Depression Ten: Tropical Depression Ten formed near 14N 44W on 24 October. Moving westward, the system dissipated the next day near 14N 49W. Maximum winds in the poorly-organized depression were 25 kt. Hurricane Grace: A low pressure system started forming near 27N 65W on 25 October. Moving north and then northwest, the system developed into a subtropical storm on 26 October. Further organization occurred, and the storm acquired tropical characteristics on 27 October and was named Grace. Hurricane intensity was reached later the same day. At the end of the sum- mary period, Grace was moving north between Bermuda and the United States with 65 kt winds. Tropical storm force winds with gusts up to 53 kt were reported on Bermuda during Grace's development. However, there are no re- ports of damage or casualties at this time. Eastern North Pacific Basin (E of 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones. Central North Pacific Basin (180 Deg. W to 140 Deg. W): No tropical cyclones. Western North Pacific Basin (W of 180 Deg. W): Typhoon Ruth: Tropical Depression 25W started forming near 9N 145E on 20 October. The depression intensified into Tropical Storm Ruth the next day as it moved basically west-northwest. Typhoon intensity was reached on 22 October. Moving west to west-northwest for the rest of the summary period, Ruth continued to strengthen to a peak intensity of 140 kt on 24 October. A slow weakening then occurred until Ruth hit Luzon Island in the Philippines on 27 October with winds near 90 kt. So far, there is an unconfirmed report that 3 people were killed on Luzon. At the end of the summary period, Ruth was moving west across Luzon with 85 kt winds. North Indian Ocean Basin: No tropical cyclones. South Indian Ocean Basin (W of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones. South Pacific Ocean Basin (E of 135 Deg. E): No tropical cyclones.
